Isn't it much better to just go U Merfolk? I think the deck would play more smoothly.

Actually, I have better results with UW Merfolk in a more open meta. They usually play the same, but it is much safer unless you add in Thirst of Knowledge and Relic of Progenitus to refill the hand. This deck just opens up for Dark Confidant and Thoughtseize for better card advantage and disruption. I wanted to try this out because of how UB Merfolks used to perform and running Path to Exile was too good to pass up. This is more of a slower version of Merfolk that have an easier time with Midrange matchups, mostly BGX.

Just feels like you're forgoing Silvergil Adept in order to play a slower draw engine. Merfolk only seem good enough at all because they can just pump out a board of 4/4 unblockables. Otherwise, there's likely a seriously better Esper midrange build with more raw power in its card rather than awkward synergies and non-synergies.
