Never watched the first FMA anime because I watched Brotherhood first and I don't like all the changes =/
Why can't FMA:B not have the same supposed quality FMA had but with the canon story-line? ;_; From what I understand they drew things out and elaborated on plot details that kinda got skipped over in FMA:B, like with the whole Leto arc (again this is what I'm told, never actually judged it for myself).

Dude I dunno. I quite liked Brotherhood, and since it is based exclusively on the canon there are some neat tie-ins that I'm assuming didn't happen in the original.

Brotherhood is shorter, (But also around 50 episodes long) and was based off the manga completely, so it has a better direction apparently.
The first anime apparently branched off into it's own thing. Like, the writers were actually aloud to write their own stuff, still haven't watched it so I don't have an opinion yet
I would start with Brotherhood, and then watch the first one while remembering that it's going to branch off in a few episodes.

In regards to the original FMA, it branches off like like Soul Eater. Personally, I prefer the first FMA anime but hey yo, opinions and stuff. I watched the original, then FMA:Brotherhood just so I can see what the cannon ending was.
