Usually, it has little significance in the game. Just indicates its explicit support for a certain creature subtype.
Usually found in tribal blocks, or to highlight a major tribe (like the Eldrazi). No other reason.

It does count onto the card types though (Creature, Sorcery, Instant, Enchantment, Artifact, Land, Planeswalker and Tribal).

Note it's only used in heavily tribal blocks. The only notable example really is Lowryn - Shadowmoor. Innistrad could have had a tribal subtheme with all the heavy Human spells, but Wizards decided against it.
