Details about the Dragon's Maze Pre Release Empty Details about the Dragon's Maze Pre Release

Post by Rodrigo Mon Jan 28, 2013 9:16 am

Did you enjoy the Gatecrash Prerelease? Great! Now let's jump forward a few months and talk about what's going to happen at the Dragon's Maze Prerelease, because it's not going to be exactly like Gatecrash and Return to Ravnica.

    Here's what's different:

    All Ten Guilds

When you walk in to a Dragon's Maze Prerelease, you'll get to select from all ten guilds of Ravnica. Then, while supplies last, you'll get a guild pack. Each guild pack will be built to support two different guilds.

    One Prerelease Card

Everyone who plays in a Dragon's Maze Prerelease will get the same alternate-art promo foil card, while supplies last. This card will not be playable in your Prerelease deck.

No Basic Land in Booster Packs

Wait... that sounds kind of negative. Let's rephrase it.

Dragon's Maze Booster Packs All Contain Nonbasic Lands

That's better! The fifteenth card in Dragon's Maze packs isn't basic land; it's nonbasic land. All ten guildgates will be showing up (with the Dragon's Maze expansion symbol), as will all ten shocklands from Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash (with their Return to Ravnica or Gatecrash symbols). They'll show up at rates about like their original rarity. There's also a mythic rare land from Dragon's Maze that will show up there sometimes!

    The Maze

There's also a maze! Players (that's you) will work collectively to advance their chosen guild through the Implicit Maze each round. There are prizes for each guild that gets all the way through the maze, and special prizes for the first guild that does it. And when the maze is completed, all participating players will receive a premium (foil) basic land promo card!

    ------------------------------------------

So, there IS a Mythic land, more Shockland reprints, and you're going to guide your guild with your allies through the maze?

Is it just me or this pre release might be even better than the last two?

Picking between Azorius, Orzhov, Dimir and Izzet is going to be just plain cruel...

The idea sounds interesting, but I'd rather wait for them to say more exactly what's going on first before judging it.

No basic lands in packs sounds awesome for sealed though.

Not being able to play the promo is a real shame. Sad

I like the idea that the people at the events who chose a guild work in tandem, because it's more flavorful that way. Guilds could play other people in their guild in the other set-up which is great for the few guilds you had to choose from, but pretty bad for flavor as people in guilds generally wouldn't fight their own. With more selection, it helps and I love it.

Well, doesn't this essentially confirm there is a physical maze that will be a Mythic land? Thanks, Wizards. I am going to enjoy this.

And 10 of the cards of Dragon's Maze are the gates? Well, the set's even smaller than we thought. (Edit: Never mind. Turns out DGM is 11 cards larger than a normal set - reprint Gates, and Mythic Land)

    Intrigued. Greatly.

10 cards are gates, 10 are shocks, so the set is already 20 cards smaller than we thought. But again, I love the idea of guilds working together during the prerelease. Awesome change, Wizards.

Guys, the Shocklands are NOT in Dragon's Maze, they're only in the guild packs for the pre release specifically.

    Seems everyone's confused:

    - The Guildgates will be reprinted in Dragon's Maze. They are 10 of the set's 156 cards.
    - The shocklands will be present in Dragon's Maze normal booster packs. Although not part of the actual set's new cards (i.e. they have no DGM set symbol), they are cards placed in the special nonbasic land slot. You will never be able to get a shockland outside of that one land slot. But, because that one land slot is in every single normal booster pack, you can count shocklands as honorary members of DGM.

Now hopefully they reprint Zendikar fetches in Friends block and they can basically remove most of the issues of getting into modern.

They would not reprint Fetchlands in any standard with Shocklands. And fetchlands should be going down when Modern is out of season. I would rather have them print the Onslaughts before the Zendikar ones anyways.
