Be yourself, don't use filters as much as you think you should, layers are your friend, yadayada.
GIMP isn't as user friendly as people make it out to be, and I think it kind of sucks, but that could just be me xD
I use Photoshop. Much better. And much more pricey.

well I cba to buy photoshop and I don't pirate, so I'll stick with GIMP for now. Also the best way to find stuff out on GIMP is just to screw around, right?

so I guess it's best to simply make a completely blue/red/pink/green background and just mess around to find stuff out?

I could go to the black market and find you a free Photoshop with everything.
But you're Shard and you can pay for one

Photoshop portables are amazing, I stated out with them and made some amazing shit.
I bought the entire Abode collection, so w/e.
Completely what Cirno said, but filters can be so much fun.
Play around with crap and it also depends on what you really want to learn about GFX.

Look at tutorial to get started, many of them are great for beginners. Gimp may not be the best program, but can do wonders.

It will teach you the basics that go into every tag. Search some on Google afterwards to see a couple random styles.

Deviant Art is a great place for tutorials and resources, also, check around some gfx forums, you'll find a lot of gfx help there.

Don't over analyze it, art is what you make it to be. Tuts are great, but experimenting with the program you go with is key. Also practice a lot, even when you don't feel like it because eventually you'll grow fond of it and if you enjoy making art it'll be worth it in the long run.

If you aren't planning to go pro, just stick with gimp. I'm a 4 year gimp vet and I still use it even though I have cs6.
No program will be user friendly at first mind you, if you devote the proper amount of time into one however you will soon grow accustomed to it.
Overall; Don't ask so many questions, just do it.
