For standard, I would have to spend money on a whole new deck. I only have modern decks right now in real life.

According to Wizards, there is no ban list for Standard. So your Modern should work. Or am I mistaken?

No, Standard is only the newest blocks out and the core set.

To elaborate; Come October the only legal sets in standard with be Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, Magic 2013 and Return to Ravnica. In February, add Gatecrash to that list.
