It's definitely overrated IMO...or I might be totally blind and stupid not seeing why is this ANY good.

A big number of tournaments show that decks with 2 to 4 Pack Rats are doing very well.

I don't see why exactly. I tested it a lot, and I never felt it being this good.

It's because it's one card that dominates Mono-Black all by itself. They have no way to remove multiple creatures at once so the Rat easily just gets out of control. It's also just not bad in any matchup except U/W and Esper.

The best card against it is Detention Sphere even when facing Esper or UW. Pack Rat also gets rid of a lot of dead cards when facing UW or Esper game one, so it isn't that bad in the matchup game 1 when the decks use 10+ removal. Oh, just for the record, they should make Pack Rat tokens!

Maybe I worded myself wrong - I don't think it's good enough to be run as a 4-of in main as I see it lately. Sure, it is nice late game, I just never saw it being this good in early game, as people make it out to be. I never played a game where I wanted to tap myself out and discard cards for more Rats on turn 3.

It theoretically should be very good in Esper, if that ever properly takes off. Gives mono-blue players a really difficult play: whether to commit to the board and leave yourself vulnerable to Supreme Verdict, or just die to an inevitable Pack Rat.

I think four might be excessive, considering it is just a win con. I think that those playing 2-3 are correct. It does have the awesome bonus of its tokens just giving you more devotion count.

It's one of the reasons people still main/side Ratchet Bomb, although to be honest, control has other ways around it, like Sphere and Verdict.

Yeah, I remember when someone won DGM Limited simply by using the one Pack Rat he pulled. Good stuff.

Will we ever have an otherwise decent draft set without some absurd bomb? Innistrad had the virtually unbeatable Invisible Stalker/Butcher's Cleaver thing going on, while Pack Rat tarnished the really good RtR draft format.

Still, I like Pack Rat either way. I mean, what a cool card that it takes basically a whole year for it to see play.
