IMO, the best God. Racks up Tons Of Damage (C) pretty quickly with Lingering Souls etc.

I very much like him, in various formats. And I agree it is the best God, followed by Thassa and Erebos.

Re: Purphoros, God of the Forge
Lingering Souls isn't exactly relevant with him.
In fact, the fact that all the best token cards are rotating is a serious hindrance to him.
That said, I still think he's arguably the best god, given he has the best permanents that fulfill his devotion in Ash Zealot, Boros Reckoner and Chandra and he's honestly in the colour which most benefits from his abilities; Getting your opponent from 20 to 0 is generally red's best strength and a 6/5 which will generally deal 6+ non-combat damage during a game is pretty handy for 4 mana.

In modern, I'd much rather be doing something broken or very difficult to interrupt, rather than casting this.

Re: Purphoros, God of the Forge
It doesn't seem THIS easy to interrupt. I mean, aside from Deglamer, what gets rid of him when he's not a creature? Untapping with this causes a pretty big snowball of damage.

Re: Purphoros, God of the Forge
It does?
So what's the plan in which this happens? You hold all your token making spells in your hand until turn 5? You play him as a non-hasted 6/5 and expect to untap with him and enough permanents available to keep him a creature?
What exactly are you planning to do with him in modern that's worth doing over other strategies with similar lines of play without the clunky shocks-on-a-stick

Re: Purphoros, God of the Forge
No, I don't count on him being a creature at all. I rather count on him to make that Lingering Souls sitting in the grave better. Or Tymaret. Or Bloodghast. Or Gravecrawler.

Re: Purphoros, God of the Forge
That kind of deck seems like it doesn't really want Purphoros to help it, really.
Sounds like a pretty sweet idea though.

Re: Purphoros, God of the Forge
No idea actually, just gonna test it as a 2-of in that maybe. Seems pretty nice to close up games since honestly the only reach I'll probably have in that is Tymaret, and that feels too little.

Or, you know, play him as a hilarious general. Squee, Norin, Sneak Attack and Grinning Ignus, and you have a deck!

I'd play it in a WR Commander to go along Storm Herd

Nah, go Gisela, she makes every ping worth 4 damage.

True, it's a better commander for this strategy.Ashiok wrote:Nah, go Gisela, she makes every ping worth 4 damage.
