    Puerto Rico Empty Puerto Rico

Post by Kira Wed Nov 07, 2012 7:48 pm

Because I saw a friend of mine post on FaceBook Puerto Rico, which is already a US territory, has opted to change its status to the 51st state of America. This awaits approval from Congress, but if they approve, the USA will have 51 states.

As with other bills, it would have to pass both the House and the Senate, and be signed by the President of the United States, or, if vetoed, be overridden by 2/3 of each of the House and Senate to become law.

    Thoughts?

I for one hate the odd look to the number. It's just a me thing lol. Other than that I don't think it would change much. Except we'll be learning about 51 states in school, and have one more place be able to vote. Also, we'd be in need for a new flag.

No, it was always 48 + Hawaii and Alaska. To my knowledge we've never removed states, only added them.

Guys, you got it all wrong. The 51st state is the Middle East.

OT: I personally don't care. Though, I did forget that Puerto Rico was a territory.

Should have been a state ages ago. Puerto Rico was basically a state that didn't pay taxes in exchange for not being able to vote.

And didn't pay taxes. Hence why they didn't want it until now.

I have the oddest feeling that when it become a state, it'll legalize gay marriage.

51 stars on millions of remade flags.
The national anthem and other shit relating to "50" states gotta be fixed.
I think they sort of jumped the gun on this. I mean, it's not a bad thing, but I really hope they had the 51-States Changes ready beforehand.

They haven't decided it yet. The OP says they have to vote on it here. It's just that PR actually wants to now. Also the national anthem doesn't say 50. It says star spangled, not a specific number.

We're already done looking at the moon for the most part, with people. The rovers are doing all the work for now. NASA has released a report recently (September) that said that if their budget ISN'T cut, they will be ready for another manned mission by 2021. NINE years. If the budget stays as is. Meaning even if we really wanted to, we won't be going back to the moon for a while.

As posted above, PR should've been added to the States ages ago. The only downside to this is certain tax breaks (or lack of taxation for some cases) that business owners in Puerto Rico hold as a luxury. If we, as U.S. citizens, want to balance out of this upcoming, and lets face it: an inevitable fiscal cliff, then accepting Puerto Rico's statehood would just give us another taxation source to help balance out the deficit of the entire nation as well as lower their poverty rate with enormous economic opportunity.

Puerto Ricans are extremely poor guys, this will take their current state of poverty down to a good 35-40% after a few months of action. They're almost at 50% right now as well at a striking figure of 15% unemployment rate (compared to the States with 7.9%.) Just saying, we can't go wrong here.
