Halloween
Hallowe'en, (a shortening of All Hallows Evening) is the eve of the Christian feast called All Saints (saint and hallow being the same thing). It may or may not be Celtic harvest festival of Sanheim in Christian guise. It was created in the year 609 when it was celebrated in mid May, which to me indicates that it was quite possibly moved to help transition the Celts into Christianity, like Christmass.

Re: Halloween
When I was a little lad, I thought Halloween was awesome. Then as I got older, I slowly lost interest. Now, I'm back to my old state of mind, but more...sophisticated.

Re: Halloween
Trick or Treating originated as a Christian tradition of "Souling" (maybe). Souling was when people would give Soul Cakes to those christened souls who went door to door to pray for the dead. Now those who went door to door were usually the poor and more specifically children. Costumes were based on the idea that All Saints and All Souls was a time when spirits could walk around on earth before going to heaven. To avoid being recognized by enemies, one needed a costume.
Will update more when I read about it.

Re: Halloween
Halloween was fun when I was younger but now at 16 going around by my self just seems kind of..strange I guess.
Mabye if I ever made some friends I would have something to do on it. Ive always loved the idea of doing something that just scares the heck out of everyone
I like the whole frightning yourself and others part of it more than anything now.

Re: Halloween
I enjoy Hallowe'en for the atmosphere it produces and it's a good chance to try to educate my friends on some history.

I would love to give a history lesson to some of my friends, but they're the immature kind that prefers pranks that border breaking the law.

Re: Halloween
I like Halloween... I just hate how tacky and over commercialized it is.
I honestly can't bring myself to participate/change costumes much, because store bought ones are either tacky and/or expensive, and home made ones tend to be even more expensive, though usable for years and around the year (IE, a coat or something of the sort used for the costume).

If anyone tries to ring the bell of my house tonight, even if it possibly is someone to hand me a 1 million bucks check, I won't open.

If I had one of those Optimus Prime voice-changer helmets, I seriously would go out Trick or Treating in it.

Re: Halloween
I never liked the idea of going out, begging from door to door. Which, in essence, is what it boils down to in the modern day and age.
I don't understand the idea of dressing up, most specifically as something scary.
I'm glad it's raining so there's no trick-or-treaters tonight.

Re: Halloween
There's another origin for trick or treating. Neighbors would gather and bring food to give away. If one didn't their soul was taken away by spirits, hence the "trick". With that in mind, mine has been postponed in light of hurricane damage.

This is possibly the only holiday I hate mainly because it isn't part of my culture; it's just shoved down our minds from the american culture that insists on invading ours.

I don't do anything for halloween, becuase the only person I could trick or treat as it were is the random homeless guy in the fields nearby.

Well, I just went trick or treating. It just wasn't the same as other years. I can kinda see why you guys don't like Halloween that much.

Re: Halloween
Halloween is not really a thing here where I live. It's always the same thing, pseudo-nationalists saying "NO, WE CAN'T HAVE FUN WITH SOMETHING THAT IS NOT FROM OUR COUNTRY".
They say that while holding their Iphones and after that, they drink Coke. Irony is really something.

I'm offended.
I hate holidays, and I'm suddenly accused of having no heart.
Not everyone has to give a shit about Halloween or Christmas.

Re: Halloween
Halloween is my favorite holiday, just not this year with this damn hurricane... So I'm looking for Christmas. Can't stand Valentine's Day but that could be me being spitefully single. St. Patrick's is stupid, April Fool's is boring around here, Easter is just a day to rot my teeth which isn't amazing, and Labor Day is just a free day off which I have yet to obtain for myself. So there's my thoughts on holidays. Only Halloween and Christmas to look for. And Thanksgiving, which I forgot.

Re: Halloween
Shall we talk culture? The US is shoving it down your throat in so far as they are a more powerful country than any other country in the world, leaving everyone else with few options. It's almost impossible to modernize to the level of America without adapting their culture. The US isn't shoving it down your throat, you are.
